Effect of Nitrogen Levels on the Plant Growth, Tuberization and Quality of Potatoes Grown in Aeroponics

Abstract
Potato plants were gown in aeroponic system with the half strength of the balanced nutrient solution developed by Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station (8 me/L NO©ý -N, 0.7 me/L NH©þ^+-N, 2 me/L H©üPO©þ^-, 4 me/L K^+, 4 me/L Ca^(2+), 2 me/L Mg^(2+), 2 me/L SO©þ^(2-)) until 30 days after planting. Nitrogen was supplied as nitrate form (NO©ý^-N) at rates of 0, 2, 4 and 8 me/L from 30 days after planting. Plant height was increased at higher levels of 4 and 8 me/L N, whereas plants became pale green and senescent at the later growing stage with 0 and 2 me/L N. Days to tuberization of potato was delayed with the increase of the level of N. Number of tubers and tuber fresh weight per plant at 70 days after planting were increased with 4 me/L N but those at 90 days after planting were not affected significantly at the 2, 4 and 8 me/L N levels in both cultivars. Dry metter and reducing sugar content were reduced, but the N and Na content in tuber were increased with high level of N. Tuber specific gravity was not affected by N level.
